2013 College Football Game Recaps – Week 7
Four of the major conferences in the world of NCAA football had significant occurrences during week 7. Two upsets by Missouri and Texas started things off on Saturday afternoon establishing them as SEC and Big 12 contenders in their respective conferences. By nightfall the Big 10 saw another unexpected event transpire with Penn State’s 4 overtime victory against Michigan. The Pac-12 also experienced some turmoil with the Utes upending a flock of Cardinals in Utah. Missouri 41, Georgia 26 (25) Missouri entered this affair with a record of 5-0, but there still somehow seemed to be a lack of respect for the Tigers effort. They can now set that concern aside after defeating seventh ranked Georgia 41-26 on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Tigers they may have won this battle, but lost the SEC war when jersey number 1, QB James Franklin went down with a separated shoulder in the 4th quarter. Most prognostications of the injury have Franklin out for 6 weeks which would mean the rest of Missouri’s regular season. For now Missouri is 6-0 (2-0 SEC) and the Bulldogs are 4-2 (3-1 SEC). Texas 36, Oklahoma 20 Texas and their much maligned coach Mack Brown can breathe a little easier after defeating (12) Oklahoma 36-20 in the Red River Rivalry game. Former Longhorn QB Colt McCoy’s “lil bro” Case (#6) obviously picked up some of his brothers traits as he did his part with 13 of 21 passing, 190 yards and 2 touchdowns. Texas was also aided by a 31 yard interception return for a TD before the 1st quarter had ended. Utah 27, Stanford 21 It ultimately came down to a goal line stand with a minute remaining on the game clock for the Pac-12 Utah Utes to stun the (5) Stanford Cardinals 27-21 in Salt Lake City on Saturday. With the ball on the 6 yard line QB, Kevin Hogan wearing jersey number 8, could not become the “Hogan’s Hero” of Cardinals fans as he threw 2 incompletions on 3rd and 4th down effectively ending Stanford’s hope of a comeback victory. This ended Stanford’s 13 game win streak and has them 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in the Pac-12. GAME OF THE WEEK Penn State 43, Michigan 40 Happy Valley was as joyous as it has been for the beleaguered football team the past 3 seasons. It took a while to complete, but after 4 extra sessions the 107,884 mostly Nittany Lions fans went home, well “Happy”, as Penn State emerged victorious 43-40 over (18) Michigan. Neither team scored in the first nor third OT’s after trading offensive possessions from their opponent’s 25 yard line. In the second overtime field goals were exchanged to keep the game going. Bill Belton became number 1 in the Penn State fans hearts to match his jersey number when he ran the ball in from 2 yards out to win it in extra frame number 4. Much credit should be given to freshman QB Christian Hackenberg (#14) for his regulation performance of 305 passing yards and 2 touchdowns helping to keep the Nittany Lions alive. |
